Description

1. INTRODUCTION Each year, the UK economy generates about 100 million tons of waste from households, commerce and industry, most of this ending up in landfill. However, the UK has made significant progress in recycling and composting of waste; less waste is being landfilled, and waste growth is also being reduced as municipal waste (MW in the following) is growing much less quickly than the economy at 0.5% per year (DEFRA, 2007). Waste generation shows a decreasing trend in the CZ; total production of waste was about 37 million tons between 2002 and 2004 and dropped to 28 million tons in 2006. The total production of waste per person has been declining as well. (MZP, 2008)
